An organisation which values its volunteers should provide:

• Respect for diversity where people are treated fairly and equally
• Someone who provides regular support and supervision (either formally or informally)
• Guidelines on your role and how to carry it out
• The reimbursement of your out-of-pocket expenses (eg travel or meals), volunteering should not cost you money
• Relevant insurance cover
• Safe and healthy conditions

Not all organisations will follow every step.  It is up to you to decide if the organisation you are volunteering with is providing the support you need.
